Making Good of Mess, with The Alternative

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

In an industry with 1.2 million NGOs and a workforce exceeding half a million, social development needs a dedicated space to analyze and process information, exchange views and ideas, and channelize the growing philanthropic spirit towards developing sustainable measures.
"The Alternative" aims to be the "other" space - an online platform that seeks to chronicle and support social development in India.
The Alternative is a web magazine that offers news, views and commentary on the development sector. They believe that fair, independent and non-partisan development journalism can empower a socially conscious civil society with the right information to get involved. The magazine provides spaces that nurture discussion and dialogue leading to constructive and collective action. The online resource centre helps people take action and figure out ways and means to contribute to a more equitable social order.
Last year, I participated in a contest organised by The Alternative, Wattay Waste - Made Good of Mess, where all the participant had to create some usable, upcycled stuff out of scrap. The winner was to get a very cool jewellery set upcycled from waste goods from the sponsors – Silver Nut Tree. I could not win but i got a chance to interact with Makepeace Sitlhou, Community Editor at The Alternative, (real name, indeed. The story behind). My DIY project was featured in their web magazine here
This year also, when Makepeace wrote to me that they would like to feature another one of mine DIY UPcycle projects, i was really happy and excited. They featured my DIY post  about up cycling old tin cans into storage boxes, which i wrote a few weeks back here on my blog.
I love doing these up cycling, eco-whimsical projects that require mostly scrap and a lot imagination! :) Here’s hoping that i get to do more of what i love…and i get to inspire a few more of you out there.
