Short Circuit

Thinking of buying a new Coffee Maker? Or is the latest toaster design tempting you? Common household appliances, like toasters, blenders, and coffee makers…they have a short shelf life. But have you ever given a thought to what happens to the old appliances that you give up or just got plain bored of?! I wonder if there’s an “Appliance Graveyard”/landfills hidden somewhere beyond the city lights…
The appliances in the past were made to last a lifetime. And we always knew someplace where we could get the broken ones fixed. There was never a replacement offer!!
But the new technology isn’t designed to last more than 2-3 years, which ensures that you keep going back to the stores for the ‘latest stuff’. It also ensures that the landfill will see a never-ending stream of broken down appliances that we don’t have the time or knowledge to fix.

This never ending piling up of the landfills with repairable appliances made, Gaspard Tiné-Berè, a student at the Royal College of Art in London, take a positive and creative action. All set to make a point about upcycling these ‘treasures’…Tiné-Berès created  “Short-Circuit”, a line of household appliances made from cork and other recycled materials.
Writes Tiné-Berès “Even when damaged, the electrical components unlike the casing are easily fixable; therefore, landfill sites are increasingly becoming sources of viable and perfectly working complex electrical and electronic components, moreover, these same components represent a major waste problem, due to their composite and toxic nature.”
He has created these upcycled appliances, from the working guts of other electronics that had been thrown away because their casings were damaged or simply outdated and glassware salvaged from wine bottle and chemistry beakers. He has worked his incredible magic to create new, working ones that look even better than the original!!
