Quirk Box - a story unlike any other...and A Contest!!

Monday, May 06, 2013

On any given day, within an urban landscape overrun with conventional sartorial endeavors, a dash of a rare eccentric style is sure to break the monotony and catch the casual observer’s eye. These flashes of sartorial inspiration are the splash of gin in the urban metro tonic, the quirky fashion statements that break the very often narrow-minded metropolitan pattern.

But designers often fly under the radar and play it safe, for that ‘need’ for financial return. It sometimes means that innovation is replaced with ‘mainstream appeal’. Although the line between a successful quirky design and unprecedented financial disaster seems thin, the reward for truly innovative design can outweigh the risks. There is huge emphasis placed on the commercial aspect of clothing design, but there are designers who are standing out from the pack in this regard.

This is the case for our designer duo in focus here, Quirk Box founders & partners Jayesh Sachdev and Rixi Bhatia.
The award winning duo, whose creations are synonyms for FUN, suffer from a case of excessive levels of creative insanity. They have been listed amongst the top 35 Game changers under the age of 35!! Quirk Box collections are inspired by Manga, Anime, Japanese Graphic Design and South East Asian Influences. Their hottest products that have been a huge rage are their iPad covers and the Minion Boyfriend Jackets. My favorite is the design collection inspired by India, a series titled Animal Farm, especially the Planners…(hint, hint!) :p
Jayesh Sachdev is an artist-designer-entrepreneur. He is the Founder/Creative Director of Emblem a contemporary Art & Design studio. Sachdev holds the National Record for having painted India’s largest concept artwork, and has held several exhibitions through New York to Singapore. His works are with private collectors across the globe and has had the honor of showcasing his works along side great Indian masters. Multi-award winner, British Council Recipient for the Top 5 Young Arts Entrepreneurs in India, 2008, Tiger Translate India Arts Awards and Crow Bar Asia Advertising Awards, Jayesh has had the fine distinction of having spoken at TEDxSPSU & TEDxSIBMPune.
Rixi Bhatia is an innovative entrepreneur, an edgy designer, an art enthusiast, passionate individual & a dreamer. She’s a graduate from NIFT Mumbai (2003) to launch her label Half Full, a women’s wear fashion & accessory line, inspired by art, transforming it into the field of fashion. As a designer she is intrigued by the nature of material, reason for design & history of craft. In 2008, Rixi, in partnership launched one of a kind concept based store in India, Attic (Mumbai), a fashion and lifestyle store.
Here’s what we spoke about…

1.    Once upon a time…
Once upon a time there was a Fish and Crab. They were swimming in the sea. In different Seas. The Fish was bored of his ordinary Sea. He wanted a bigger, funner, better sea.
So he swam and he swam, meeting many fish but no one fish was funner or better. Than he saw a crab lazing under a shell. The Fish greeted and Crab with a Hello. The Crab was creeped out by this strange Fish, but soon realised he was a cool fish. They talked, and they talked and founded Quirk Box, and Quirk Box lives quirkily ever after.

2.    What inspires you, motivates you and what pulls you down?
Existing. Our daily lives. Surroundings. Experiences. No one thing. No particular episode. A sum of all our experiences is what inspires us.
What brings us down? We try not to think of it that way. Everyday is a new challenge. And we thrive on it.

3.    What is design and how is it different from business? Or is it?
Design is Art with a function. Business is applying that design into context.

4.    Your successes? And failures?
It is a success that we pursue what we love, irrespective of its outcome. It would be a failure if we quit something we were so passionate about.

5.    Being an entrepreneur is like…
Having onions being served to you as an ingredient to make ice-cream and expecting you to make it taste good.
