buti or boteh?

A pattern so small visually but if you go through its history, its a travelogue!!

From Tamilnadu in the south of India, to Punjab in north India. From Pakistan to Persia. From a small town in Scotland to the 'Hippy' America...and all this spread over thousands of years...phew! some story it is...
Imports from the East India Company in the first half of the 17th century made paisley and other Indian patterns popular, and the Company was unable to import enough to meet the demand.
It has been used a symbol to ward off the evil eye in the old times and as a symbol of rebellion by the youth in the modern times.
This 'mango design' is of Iranian origin but its western name "Paisely" is derived from the town of Paisely in central Scotland. But the charm of this small Buti lies in its adaptability. Its adorned the necks of beautiful women in the temple jewelry of south India and the intricate Kanchipuram silk sarees. It has been a part of the Iranian textiles patterns as well as Welsh's. It has gone beyond clothes, and been added to paintings, jewelry, frescoes, curtains, tablecloths, quilts, carpets, garden landscaping, and pottery also.
The buti started a love-affair with my designs and i created these collection of handmade, upcycled and wooden animal shaped wind mobiles. These are all made out of rejected or repurposed wood pieces. They have been styled by decoupage craft.

From romancing the beautiful hands of a bride to be, to the royal robes of yesteryear Kings and Queens, call it by any name, the Buti has been there and done that!
